there are subcultures, they’ve just moved away from music. The 20th century was a freak century for music because recording equipment was invented. Everyone got hyped. Now the internet has come out, the 21st century is going to be hyped about that.
"The medium is the message", and within the 21st centuries medium you already get subcultures like different types of hackers, and pirates and bedroom stock traders, Silk Road type organisations.
These are underground things. Half of them are illegal. Half of them require knowledge of using an ‘underground’ internet or else the police be aknockin.
That use to be the case with music, musicians were essentially dangerous speakers in society. Now we’ve moved on to the next front-line: people with dangerous information, dangerous ways of reshaping the structure of society. Fuck music for change exceptfor upping the mood - the new shits deep, and I’m sure, soon it will become pretty beautiful too once the artists get over the 90’s pop-vibe nostalgia.
Maybe music will find a place within these subcultures once they understand themselves a bit better,
But for now it’s like that bit at the end of Jurassic Park where the pterodactyl flies out to find new places to breed.
And people are like - wut? How do you sell mp3’s to a dinosaur? And the dinosaurs already downloaded an anthology of every sound ever made.
